Principal Fountain's Update

Nov 4, 2018

Dear Families,

It was great seeing so many of you at Saturday’s Turkey Trot/color run and plant sale. I love seeing JBE’s wonderful traditions evolve and morph into new and exciting ones. A special shout out to Coach Halse, who was the recipient of most of the colored powder!

JBE is a warm, loving, fun school on a mission:

To provide authentic, challenging, creative learning experiences in a supportive and engaging environment in order to develop global leaders with strong character, ready to serve their communities.

I hope that you had a positive, informative data conference with your child’s teacher, celebrated your child’s strengths and walked away with strategies to help him or her grow to the next level. We want every egret to reach their potential and you are such a huge part of that possibility. As we enter what can be a very busy season, here are few suggestions to discuss at your next family meeting to keep students growing academically:

  • Make sure kids are getting enough sleep.
  • Eat simple, healthy meals together as a family when possible.
  • In addition to homework, which should only take 15-50 minutes, depending on the grade, consider reading together as a family instead of watching TV (be on the lookout for our upcoming Family Genre Challenge!).
  • Utilize our adaptive digital tools. All students CD-5th grade have access to the reading program Lexia and all have access to a math program as well (Dreambox, Aleks, etc.). Lessons adjust to the needs of the student and are very engaging. If you do not have access to a tablet or computer at home, our Media Center is open to families every day between 6:30 am-7:00 am. Contact your teacher if you are uncertain about how to access these programs.

We have about 30 school days left before the winter holiday break. Let’s work together to make the most out of each one!

Tuesday - 11/6 - VOTE!!! No school.

Wednesday - 11/7 - Principal’s List Breakfast (4th & 5th Grade 7:45-8:15; 3rd Grade 8:20-8:50)

Dear Families,

While we are sad to see Ms. Zamboki leave our Egret’s nest, I am happy to share that we have a new Assistant Principal!!! Ashland Temony is coming to us from Minnie Hughes Elementary. Join us Thursday night at 6:00 pm for a small reception to welcome Ms. Temony to the JBE family.

She will officially begin on Monday, October 22nd.

Are you thinking about long sleeves and fleece jackets? If so, you will happy to know that the uniform ordering window is now open T-Shirts and Sweatshirts:

Data conferences are right around the corner. This will be a time to learn about and discuss multiple pieces of information about your child’s academic and social development and achievement with the teacher. Depending on your child’s grade you may be looking at last spring’s SCReady and SC Pass Scores, MAP growth reports, Second Step social/emotional goals, text levels, Fast Bridge results, etc.

Upon completion of the conference, you should know what your student’s goals are and how you can partner with the teacher to help your child reach those goals. If we are going to take James B. Edwards to the next level of success, it is going to take a concerted effort of all stakeholders.  The School Improvement Council is committed to the vision of helping all stakeholders move the bar on student growth and achievement. Their first project is a collaboration with the Principal’s Cabinet to create a meaningful and engaging Family Literacy Night. Save the date- November 15th, is going to be a wonderful night!  Much more information will be coming soon.

Ms. Benton is now offering “Family Library”- M-F 6:30 am-7: 00 am.  Feel free to come with your child to find great books, do research, or use the computers.

Capital Campaign update from PTO:

The Capital Campaign is still going strong but we are far from our goal of 100% participation. The prizes still are up for grabs and we will post an updated tracker on Monday morning. I sure hope that lots of classes will get to wear their costumes on Halloween! We also realize that capturing support from our grandparents, family members, and community supporters is key to reaching our goal. In order to accomplish that, we've launched an informative video that you can find on facebook or our website to help share our mission as well as a mad-lib style letter you can send to families and friends. I would also like to send a special thanks to the families that have joined us as gold, platinum, and diamond sponsors. Thank you for believing in and supporting our mission!

Thank you for all you do to make JBE the best little school in the Lowcountry!

Sincerely,

Ms. Fountain

Oct 5, 2018 Dear Families,

Exciting development in the Capital Campaign…. Any classroom with 100% participation will be allowed to wear school appropriate costumes to school on Halloween!! Donate NOW!

As some of you are aware, a behavior incident occurred at JBE this week. It was handled per District protocol. This is a great opportunity to review the Code of Conduct with your child about expected behavior and the consequences for misconduct. Additionally, it would be a great time to review the JBE Behavior Matrix to talk about expectations specific to JBE. If you have any questions about this.

September 29 Dear Families,

JBE is such a wonderful place for students to learn! Today, kids were making applesauce, pulling weeds, visiting with firefighters, and many other engaging activities.

We are almost one-third of the way toward meeting our capital campaign goal!! The money raised will help us continue (and possibly grow) our French program, our technology program, our greenhouse, and many other programs and projects that make JBE the best little school in the Lowcountry.

Don’t forget, we are celebrating participation, not the amount a person gives. We want everyone to give the right amount for their family. Donating with a recurring payment option is a great option for many of us. The first classroom with 100% participation will receive an extra recess and a PIZZA PARTY!

There will be other participation prizes coming soon.

Please check out our website and FB page!

September 22 Dear Families,

Yesterday was a very exciting day at James B. Edwards! Not only was it pajama day, we practiced a severe weather/tornado drill and a fire drill. We then joined together at the end of the day to have Community Circle and celebrated having French this year by singing, “Bon Jour.”  As we entered the cafeteria, the fire alarm went off again! Thankfully, it was a false alarm.

The kickoff to our Capital Campaign is currently happening on the playground. If you read this before noon, please come join us to celebrate all the wonderful things happening at JBE, dunk a teacher, run an obstacle course, blow giant bubbles, and have a free hotdog!  Then go home and contribute to the Capital Campaign to ensure we can continue to do amazing things at JBE, The School of Global Leadership. We are hoping for 100% participation, so please think about what your family is able to give- any amount is appreciated.

The first classroom with 100% participation will receive an extra recess and a PIZZA PARTY!
