Celebrating Ms. Owen: National School Librarian Day

National School Librarian Day

Thank you, Ms. Owen, for all that you do for JBE!

1. What inspired you to become a teacher-librarian?
I’ve always loved how books open doors to new worlds, ideas, and perspectives. Combining that with my love of learning led me to become a teacher-librarian, where I can use my passion for education and literacy. I strive to inspire students to become lifelong learners by helping them discover the joy of reading while also equipping them with essential research and digital literacy skills. It’s fulfilling to be a part of a student's educational journey.

2. What do you love most about your job?
The best part of my job is connecting students with books and resources that excite and inspire them. Whether it’s recommending a great story, helping with research, or creating a welcoming space for curiosity and learning, every day brings something new. I also love collaborating with teachers to integrate literacy into different subjects and watching students develop confidence in their reading and research abilities.

3. What advice do you have for parents and students to help foster a love for reading?
For parents, I’d say: Read together and make books a part of daily life. Let kids choose books that interest them, even if it’s comics or graphic novels—any reading is good reading! Also, be a reading role model by letting them see you enjoy books. For students, I’d encourage them to explore different genres, formats, and authors. Reading isn’t just about school—it’s about finding stories that excite and inspire you. The right book is out there for everyone!

Guidance
JBE Appreciates Our School Counselor

1. What inspired you to become a school counselor? What do you love most about your role in a school?

I was inspired to become a school counselor by my interactions with one of my school counselors growing up who was so down to earth, accessible, and uplifting.  I love the role I have in our school in that I get to see all of the students and try to meet their needs either individually or through monthly lessons.

2. How do you support students in achieving their academic, personal, and college/career goals?
I support students by understanding their unique abilities and challenges and help create a supportive environment that will help them succeed both academically and emotionally.

3. What encouragement do you want to offer students and families to help them succeed?

If a family is going through a difficult time in their life, I want to problem-solve the best solutions available to them. I want each and every student to know they are important and loved.

"James B. Edwards is where some of my best friends were made. I always feel safe and comfortable there. If you were to envision an amazing school, that is what JBE is. The three words that I would use to describe JBE are remarkable, enlightening, and loving. Though I'm excited to move on to middle school, I will always remember James B. Edwards Elementary, the BEST little school in the Lowcountry!   -Sanders Dozier, 5th grade

"Big changes happen a little bit at a time. When we create a safe place for our students, when we are open to trying new things, and when we show up everyday with a positive mindset: great things happen! " - Sarah Sweatt, Teacher of the Year
